The Best Way To Care For Your Hemp Shower Curtain

Hemp shower curtains offer many benefits, but in order to experience these, you’ll want to make sure you learn how to care for your hemp shower curtain properly to extend its lifespan. Today we’re going to share the best ways to wash and care for this type of shower curtain and how to get mildew out of your hemp shower curtain.

Keep Your Hemp Shower Curtain Dry Between Showers

Before we look at how to wash your hemp shower curtain, you need to think about how you treat it between each use. One of the best ways to maintain your shower curtain is to keep it in a well-ventilated bathroom. This will help to reduce the chance of mould and mildew, which are common issues with any type of shower curtain. Always make sure your hemp shower curtain fully dries between each use. Don’t leave it dangling on the wet floor or at the bottom of your bathtub, and instead, stretch it across your shower rail so that it dries properly.

Washing Your Hemp Shower Curtain

We recommend washing a hemp shower curtain at least once a month, but many people do this up to twice a month for best results. To keep it in top condition, we recommend washing your curtain in a washing machine with either cold or lukewarm water. Stick to natural detergents or replace this with distilled white vinegar. After washing, make sure you dry the curtain properly or put it on the low setting in your tumble dryer.

An inexpensive way to wash your hemp shower curtain is with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. On a gentle wash with warm water, you can add half a cup of baking soda for the wash cycle alongside your washing detergent. When it moves onto the rinse action, you’ll then add half a cup of white vinegar. This is a great way to prevent mould and mildew, but if you do notice any spots are present still, make a paste of water and baking soda. This can be rubbed directly onto the mould before repeating the cycle. Leave the shower curtain out in the sun to dry if possible after this process for best results.

How To Get Mildew Out Of Hemp Shower Curtains?

While hemp is naturally resistant to mildew, many users find that they experience either mould or mildew when they don’t keep their hemp shower curtain in a well-ventilated area.

  • The best way to prevent this from happening is to wash your shower curtain every few weeks and then hang it to dry properly or put it on a low setting in your tumble dryer. For an extra preventative measure to avoid mildew, you can opt to add a quarter of a cup of distilled white vinegar to your laundry. These can be used to treat mildew once it appears, but it’s best to do all you can to prevent this issue in the first place.
  • Another option for removing mildew is to use hydrogen peroxide, which can be found at most drug or grocery stores. Cover the area of your shower curtain in the undiluted liquid and leave it for between 12 and 24 hours. (Hydrogen peroxide is also good to get rid of blood on your bamboo sheets!). This should be long enough for the mildew to completely disappear, but depending on its severity, it may need to be left for the full day. You may notice that an iodine smear appears during the soaking process, but this will disappear over time when you leave the cloth in the liquid.
  • For light fabrics, you can use a slice of lemon and salt together in a mixture to remove stains and mould. Rub this paste directly onto the stains and allow it to sit for up to 30 minutes. The acid that’s present in the lemon will help to remove any mould, which you can then wipe away with a damp cloth. From there, you can use a gentle cycle with warm water to wash the curtain before leaving it to hang dry outside.

Hemp shower curtains are a fantastic option for any household, but it’s so important to learn how to care for this type of material properly. When you don’t follow the tips we shared above, you may find that mould and mildew appear, which is why we always recommend cleaning your curtain once or twice a month. As you get into a good routine of cleaning your hemp shower curtain, you’ll soon start to experience all the benefits of using this natural material for yourself.
